Ever since the British gained control through a treaty in 1861, Lagos has been the main industrial center of Nigeria. Millions of people throughout Europe have migrated to Lagos looking for trade. The kings of Lagos had good relations with the Portuguese and later established a flourishing slave trade. The British attacked Lagos in 1851. The British gained control of Lagos in 1861. In 1960, Lagos was made the capitol of Nigeria. In 1975, Lagos was replaced as capitol of Nigeria by Abuja.
