In the 18th century, Lagos became a significant port in the Atlantic trade. As a result, people started coming to Lagos to trade which made the population grow.
The region that Lagos is in hosts the two largest seaports and 65% of the industrial plants in Nigeria.
Increasing world oil prices and relocation of foreign workers has made it the most expensive city in Africa.

The average rent of a three-bedroom apartment in Lagos is $3,624 a month. The average income of the middle class in Nigeria is about $600 a month.
