International relations
In the late 15th century, Lagos was settled by Yoruba fisherman. In the late 16th century to the mid 19th century, the kingdom of Benin dominated Lagos. The Portuguese landed on Lagos in 1472. Trade was slow but a century later the portuguese and the local obas established a flourishing slave trade.
The British navy attacked Lagos in 1851. Ten years later, Britain gained control over the city through a treaty. From surrounding countries, Lagos attracted European settlers and Christian refugees.
In the mid-ninteenth century, slaves liberated by the British antislavery came to Lagos returning from Sierra Leone, Cuba, and Brazil. Europeans came to Lagos to seek trade opportunities. A colonial regime was imposed in Lagos in 282 by the British.
Flooding from ocean
Lagos suffers from flooding from ocean waves. This flooding is causing businesses to be destroyed.
